Our Very OWN Weather Guy!

Born in Hood River, Mark actually spent many years growing up in both Mt. Angel, Oregon and Chehalis, Washington. One thing that impressed Mark as a boy was traveling through the Gorge area. The intense wind and and cold left him fascinated with the weather conditions he observed. After high school, Mark Nelsen went to and graduated from the University of Washington and where he got what he describes as a "B.S. in weather!" After finishing his degree at the "only meteorology school nearby," Mark went to work at a private forecasting company in downtown Portland where he forecasted weather for windsurfers in the Gorge! Spending two years at this company, Mark applied for a job at KOIN 6 in the fall of 1993. Hired on, Mark worked at channel 6 for seven years. Currently, he is the chief meteorologist at FOX 12. From Corbett to England's Oxford University

Born in Portland and raised in Corbett since birth, Kendal Hocking attended Corbett schools K-12. She is the middle of three daughters born to Corbett High sweethearts, James and Sharon Hocking. Considering herself to be very quiet and shy as a child, Kendal said she had a speech impediment that led to four years of speech therapy. Interested in art and music, she also played volleyball and soccer for many years of her childhood. Kendal played the clarinet in the school band from 5th to 11th grade. She began playing the piano at age five and still plays today. Kendal loved art classes in school, but also did a great deal of drawing on her own at home. The family did a lot of camping every summer and were close with other neighbor families, spending a great deal of time with them. Kendal graduated in 2011 from Corbett High and then attended Capernwray Hall in England for a year. The Founding Mother of Corbett's July 4th Celebration

The year was 1959. Bob and Nev Scott were helping Bob's brother and wife move into their new home on Trout Creek Road. Passing by the filling station in Springdale each trip they made out to Corbett, they talked about how great it would be to OWN that little filling station. The next time they drove out to Corbett, Nev told Bob to stop and ask if the owners would ever consider selling. "Yes." "When?" "NOW." Lee and Florence Neidert were the current owners of the 1927 station and attached 3 bedroom apartment, and they were ready to sell the place. Nev and Bob, with their 3 kids moved into the apartment, selling gas at 29 cents a gallon. Bob ran a shop out of the building and several years later when they applied for a permit to upgrade and restore the "tired" station, Multnomah Co. denied the request.
